People often use "mold" and "mildew" interchangeably, but they behave very differently. Knowing which one you are dealing with helps you decide whether a simple cleaning will do or whether you need a professional.

What Is Mildew?

Mildew is a surface fungus that typically appears as a flat, powdery or downy patch in gray, white, or yellow. It grows on damp surfaces like tile, fabric, and paper and is usually easy to wipe away.

What Is Mold?

Mold tends to be fuzzy or slimy and comes in many colors including green, black, and blue. Unlike surface mildew, mold can penetrate materials and grow into walls, wood, and insulation, making it harder to remove.

Why the Difference Matters

  • Mildew is generally a cosmetic, surface-level nuisance
  • Mold can cause structural damage and deeper contamination
  • Mold is more likely to affect indoor air quality and health
  • Persistent or spreading growth signals a moisture problem

When to Call a Professional

If growth keeps returning, covers a large area, or is paired with a musty smell and moisture, it is likely mold and worth a professional inspection.
